On a partly cloudy Saturday morning in Grand Rapids, the Panther pack proved to be extremely powerful as they grabbed another 2nd place trophy along with 6 medals in the Varsity race at the Cougar/Falcon Invitational. Seniors Jake Follett and Cam Devries led the way for WO with times of 16:47 and 16:49 good enough for 8th and 9th places. Freshman hotshot Max Post, along with junior captain Boston WIlkinson and senior captain Michael Dummer followed quickly in 10th, 11th and 12th places with times of 16:49, 16:49 and 16:55 respectively. Post's time places him just 6 seconds behind the fastest freshman in WOHS cross-country history and he still has half a season to go. The Panther top 7 was rounded out by junior captain Sebastian Ruiz (14th place, 17:01) and senior Porter Yurk (24th place in 17:34). Over the three races, Varsity, JV and a stellar Freshmen-only race, the Panthers earned a total of 10 medals and raced to 10 personal records. The 9th grade crew also took 2nd place as a team, led by the power trio of Henry Frederick, Miles Koch and Regan Luce with times of 19:18, 19:40 and 19:58 respectively. The next race for West Ottawa is a crucial OK Red Conference Jamboree on Wednesday, September 24 at 4:30 pm hosted by Grand Haven High School on their campus. This race will count for one fourth of the conference championship.
