Hey WO Tennis Family, This weekend was perhaps the best single-day performance our girls program has ever had. Ever. Let's dig in. Who was there: Eisenhower - They finished 2nd in D1 last year, and many people (myself included) believe they are the favorite to win the state title this spring. Troy - Finished 4th in D1 last year. They graduated more than most, but they are likely somewhere right around 10th. Bloomfield Hills - Finished 10th last year, and so far they look to be in that range again this year. Here are the final scores of the tournament: 1st - Eisenhower - 20 points 2nd - West Ottawa - 18 points 3rd - Troy - 11 points 4th - Bloomfield Hills 5 So what does this mean for us? Well, first, I think it reasonably means we can compete with any team in Michigan. It means that we are able to roll out a talented player/team at all 9 flights. It means there are multiple places where an individual state title is at least possible outcome for our players. It means that we are competing with and beating teams in school districts that are just as big as us, but where the medium home value is between $800,000-$900,000. It means our girls have been outworking people for a lot of years, and that their hard work is paying off. Here's a brief rundown of the action: Evie Price (1 singles) - Beat the best player in the whole cities of Troy and Bloomfield Hills. Played incredible hard in each match from start to finish, and looked like one of the best players in the State. Lost to Gabby Sadowski, who won the state title last year at 1 singles. No shame in that, and it was an incredible day. Question to think about...does Evie have one of the most complete games in Michigan? Yes, I believe she does. Danielle Lebster (2 singles) - Beat Troy and Bloomfield Hills. Against Eisenhower, she took 4 games. Only two girls all year have been able to take more games off Morgan Emerick. Amazing performance from start to finish. Question to think about...Is Danielle Lebster the fastest tennis player in Michigan? I think maybe yes. Jessica Zhang (3 singles) - Flight Champion! Jessica won all 3 matches, dropping only a single set on the year. Question to think about...is there a more mentally strong 3 singles player in Michigan than Jessica? or at any flight? I haven't found one. Kayla Jones (4 singles) - Flight Champion! Kayla not only went 3-0 on the day, she only lost 10 combined games. In the cold windy weather she was playing in, that's tough to do against any three random teams. Doing it above some of the states best programs...wow! Question to think about...how far can Kayla go this year? I don't know, but the ride to finding out is a fun one to be on!!! Eden Hamilton and Maggie Rothstein (1st doubles) - Also flight champions on the day, going 3-0. First doubles has been a tough spot for us historically against the top East side teams, because, well, most of the top programs have college level players at 1st doubles. For some reason though, our girls seem unbothered by this fact. Question to think about...are Eden and Maggie able to read each other's minds while playing? Logic says no, but it sure feels that way when we watch them on court together. Kallyn Gaul and Lovelle Kim (2nd doubles) - Beat Troy and Bloomfield Hills soundly, fell to Eisenhower in a close three set match. Question to think about...out of the 15 schools Eisenhower's 2 doubles has played this year, who is the only team to take even a set off of them this year? Well, that I know for a fact...that would be Kallyn and Lovelle!!! Aleah Feliu and Liv Smith (3rd Doubles) - Improved as the day went on, beating Bloomfield Hills in their third match. Question of the day...how good can these two continue to get? Well, they are two of the most improved players from a year ago, so I don't see why they can't keep it up! Audrey Anderson and Mallory Paff (4th doubles) - While we didn't score wins at 4th doubles, they produced two of our closest matches on the day. Question of the day...does it matter at all if 4th doubles gets seeded at State? I'm starting to think it might not. They are showing a level that's capable of beating anyone, so I don't particularly care where they're drawn at this point. Our all-freshman flight is improving daily, and that should scare people. Kate Greco and Haylee Geerlings (5th doubles) - Another bright spot in the doubles, Kate and Haylee beat both Bloomfield Hills and Troy. Question of the day...how good can these girls get? Well, they started off the year by dropping power to stay consistent. Each match they are hitting harder and harder without losing ANY consistency. So, I'm thinking pretty good!
