Hi WO Tennis Family, The girls hosted Hudsonville today in our first conference duel of the season. We played WELL. My thought going into the match was that Hudsonville was going to be pretty good. It turns out there are very good, definitely one of West Michigan's better teams. Shout out to their players, as well as their new coach, Julia Peterson. We won 7-2 today, and were engaged in many close matches. As for our girls, they deserve a ton of credit for how they took on the challenge. You can tell that the group is starting to get into mid-season form. Making quick moves to the ball is becoming more of a reflex, and less of a thought process. Players are routinely communicating in between points. We are spreading positive energy to our partners and to our players on the courts next to them. And probably most importantly, we are showing the ability to live in the present moment, and not thinking about past mistakes or future results. We take each point as it comes, and afterwards prepare for the next point. I'd like today's shout out to go to our Seniors and Captains: Aleah Feliu Kate Greco Eden Hamilton Kayla Jones Danielle Lebster Jessica Zhang All six are leading the team like the adults they are soon becoming. Here are some examples: - Practice begins at 3pm every day...on the dot. A few days ago the coaches were near the courts where the JV practices to discuss something with Coach Bentley. At 3:00 sharp, the entire varsity team was on the line beginning their dynamic warmup. The captains begin the practice every day. - Team sisters. Our amazing prior assistant coach, Kayla Wolma, started a tradition on the team where each player has a team sister on the team. Yesterday I realized that with Kayla gone, I need to add that to my to-do, because I wanted to see the tradition continue. Talked to the team about it yesterday, and their response was "coach, everyone already has one, we set it up outside of practice a while ago". Aleah, Kate, Eden, Kayla, Danielle, Jessica...THANK YOU for the amazing young women you are, and the adults you are about to become. I am proud of you in so many different ways, and I appreciated you more than words can express. What's next? A lot actually. Today we are heading as a team to Utica for a quad tomorrow. We will take on Eisenhower (2nd in D1 last year) Troy (4th in D1 last year), and Bloomfield Hills (11th in D1 last year). We finished 7th by the way. This will likely be the highest profile tennis event in the state this weekend across any division. Girls, let's take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate how special it is that we're able to be in this company. You work hard for years to reach individual goals and common team goals. One of those goals is to compete on equal footing with the very best teams. Tomorrow we do that. Thanks to the many who came to the match to support us. We love seeing you! Look for another article in the coming days recapping our big weekend ahead.
