Welcome back WO Tennis Fans, a new season has arrived! This past Friday our Varsity Girls kicked off their 2025 Spring season with wins over Grand Rapids Christian and Holland Christian. We'll use this post to introduce our new team to the community and set the stage for this spring! Last year's crew earned the teams 7th straight OK-Red Conference Title, their 6th Straight Regional Title, and 4th top-10 finish at the D1 State Finals in the past five years. We said goodbye to Seniors Megan Blake and Haven March, along with exchange student Hortense Marguez. We also said goodbye to Kayla Wolma, an assistant coach who made a forever mark on our program in 4 amazing years. The girls celebrated the success of last year for a bit, but pretty quickly went right back to the courts. I'm just going to come out and say it, last year was the biggest year over year improvement I've ever been part of. All summer, fall, and winter, these girls have been on the tennis courts and in the weight room. And of course we had a lot of fun doing it! Our Singles Players This is one of the top singles lineups in ANY division. Period. They won 7 of 8 total matches of the day. The lone loss was to a girl who I believe is likely one of the top 2-3 players in Division 3, and that one was close to turning towards a victory. The fierceness and discipline they play with is incredible. Evie Price(10) showed some of the most creative and talented shot making I've ever seen. She is a problem solver. Danielle Lebster(12) is the fastest player on a team of exceptionally fast young women. She is a problem for other players to solve. Jessica Zhang(12) used her forehand and backhand to make the state semi's last spring, and has come back this year featuring an upgraded serve, return, and net game. Kayla Jones(12) is the most powerful player on the team. She can rally all day, but opponents know she's alway one swing away from hitting an unreturnable shot. Our Doubles Teams: Talent and athleticism are dripping off these young ladies. A mix of experience with six girls returning to complement four freshmen who have what it takes to handle the pressure from day one. They won 6 of 10 matches played on Friday. Eden Hamilton(12) and Maggie Rothstein(11) haven't played as partners since 6th grade, but they figured it out immediately. These two exuded self confidence on Friday, and they have good reason to be self confident. Kallyn Gaul (11) and Lovelle Kim (11) played a year ago together, and were our most dominant doubles flight in 2024. They are amazing individually, and more than twice as good when they are together. The ultimate partnership. Aleah Feliu (12) and Olivia Smith (9). You could run a small town on the energy these two produce. It's the kind of effort you can only give when you truly love the thing you're doing. Kate Greco (12) and Haylee Geerlings(9) walk onto the court with so many ways to win a point. Both have exploded as net players recently, and we are just beginning to unlock the possibilities that opens up. Audrey Anderson(9) and Mallory Paff(9) are two inexperienced balls of raw talent. On Friday, they molded some of that ball of talent into two varsity wins against strong competition. They are doing what freshmen are supposed to do...work hard and learn fast. On Friday, we got our first chance as a team to show what we can do. Here's who we played: Grand Rapids Christian - Finished 6th place in Division 3 last spring. They returned most of their lineup, including an incoming freshman who may be one of the top 3 players in Division 3. Result: 6-3 Win Holland Christian - Finished 7th place in Division 3 last spring. Also returned most of their players from a year ago. Result: 8-1 Win Here were full results of each match, great work ladies!!!
