The West Ottawa Panthers didn't just win the OK-Red Conference Championship. They dominated it. West Ottawa capped an extraordinary conference season by winning the OK-Red Conference Championship Tournament with 44 points, securing the program's sixth consecutive conference championship and continuing one of the most impressive stretches in West Ottawa boys tennis history. The Panthers entered the tournament having already gone a perfect 5-0 in OK-Red dual matches. They then delivered another dominant performance at the conference tournament, finishing six points ahead of second-place Rockford. West Ottawa's 44 points led the six-team field, followed by Rockford with 38, Hudsonville with 29, Grand Haven with 28, Grandville with 27 and East Kentwood with 21. The OK-Red championship is determined by combining the dual-match and conference-tournament portions of the season, with each accounting for 50 percent of the final result. West Ottawa won both. After finishing 5-0 in the regular-season conference duals, the Panthers won the conference tournament and earned the maximum six points, giving them the outright OK-Red championship. But the numbers tell an even bigger story. Doubles Dominance: 34-1 Against the Conference The West Ottawa doubles flights finished the conference season with a remarkable 34-1 record in individual doubles matches against OK-Red opponents when the conference tournament was included. West Ottawa doubles teams went a perfect 25-0 during the dual-match portion of the conference season, meaning the Panthers did not lose a single individual doubles match against an OK-Red opponent during the regular season. That consistency carried directly into the conference tournament, where West Ottawa captured four of the five doubles championships. Four Doubles Champions The doubles courts were the biggest source of West Ottawa's dominance at the conference tournament. At No. 1 doubles, top-seeded Senior Captain Lincoln Taylor and sophomore Dawson Linn started the day strong against Grand Haven's Owen Spoelman and Parker Cramblet, winning their semifinal match 6-0, 6-0. In the final, the Panthers beat Rockford’s Jayden Fudge and Ryan Stark 6-3, 6-2 to win the 1 doubles flight in convincing fashion. At No. 2 doubles, Josh Reimink and Jonah Hoff continued the Panthers' run. The No. 1 seeds defeated Hudsonville's Reece Dodson and Drey Krikke 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals and then defeated Grandville's Landon Nguyen and Will Bouwman 6-2, 6-2 to claim the championship. At No. 3 doubles, Brody Sayrath and Ethan Byrd also captured the conference title. After a 6-1, 6-3 semifinal victory over Grand Haven, the Panthers' top-seeded pair battled Hudsonville's Tanner Kalman and Jude Beel in the championship match. Sayrath and Byrd dropped the second set but answered in the third, winning 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. At No. 4 doubles, Thomas Diekevers and Landon Schwallier were nearly flawless. The top-seeded Panthers dropped just eight games across their two tournament matches, defeating Grandville's Ben Weatherston and Gavin Bailey 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals before defeating Hudsonville's Levi VanderLugt and Bradley Souser 6-3, 6-4 in the championship match. At No. 5 doubles, top-seeded Ethan Gibson and Blake Theobald reached the championship match after a 6-1, 6-2 semifinal victory over Steven Cao and Dan Hildebrand from East Kentwood. They then battled Rockford's Julian Scott and Ethan Lund through three sets before falling in a pair of tiebreakers, 7-6 (3), 0-6, 7-6 (7). So even in the one doubles flight the Panthers didn't win, they still finished runner-up. Four championships. One runner-up. A nearly flawless performance. Watkin Wins No. 3 Singles West Ottawa's dominance wasn't limited to doubles. Isaac Watkin captured the No. 3 singles championship, entering the tournament as the No. 2 seed and finishing above his seed to secure the flight championship. After receiving a first-round bye, Watkin defeated East Kentwood’s Ty Burton 7-6 (5), 6-1 in the semifinals. He then defeated Grandville’'s Ethan Zuidema 6-2, 7-6 (2) in the championship match. Watkin's championship gave West Ottawa another flight victory and added to an already dominant team performance. Zernicke Outplays His Seed At No. 2 singles, Jack Zernicke also exceeded his tournament seed and finished third. Zernicke opened with an impressive 6-1, 6-1 victory over Hudsonville's Eli Feenstra before advancing to the semifinal round against Rockford's Broderik Gee. Broderik proved to be too much this time, beating Jack in the semifinal 7-5, 6-2. Recognizing that every match matters, Zernicke was determined to go out and win his final match of the day. Playing against Grandville’s Zayne Sorokin who had beaten him earlier in the season, Zernicke won his final match of the day 6-1, 6-1. At No. 1 singles, Soren Traver finished fifth. After falling to Rockford's Alex Moore in the opening round in 3 sets, Traver rebounded with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Grandville’s Evan Mann. At No. 4 singles, Gavin White, the No. 3 seed, finished fourth after opening the tournament with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 victory over East Kentwood's Doug LaDue IV. Gavin then faced Noah Clark from Rockford who he had not played yet this season. Battling to the last ball, Rockford bested West Ottawa 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinal match. Gavin’s last match of the day was a 3 set grinder that Hudsonville’s Hekar Bingol ended up winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. When the final numbers were added up, West Ottawa had scored 44 points, six more than Rockford, to win the conference tournament. But the tournament championship was just the final piece of a season-long performance: The Panthers went 5-0 in conference duals. The doubles lineup went 25-0 in those duel matches. West Ottawa went 34-1 in individual doubles matches when the conference tournament was included. West Ottawa put players in championship matches across the lineup and produced five flight champions overall: Watkin at No. 3 singles, Taylor/Linn at No. 1 doubles, Reimink/Hoff at No. 2 doubles, Sayrath/Byrd at No. 3 doubles, & Diekevers/Schwallier at No. 4 doubles. Gibson/Theobald added a runner-up finish at No. 5 doubles while Zernicke’s third place finish and White and Traver’s contributions further strengthened West Ottawa’s team total. And when it was all over, West Ottawa had secured its sixth consecutive OK-Red Conference Championship. For the Panthers, this wasn't simply another conference title. It was another statement. Six straight. It was a fitting finish to a conference season in which West Ottawa consistently demonstrated the depth, competitiveness, and team-first mentality needed to come out on top in a very strong OK-Red Conference. Next up, the Panthers will turn their attention to the Regional Tournament, which will take place Thursday, Oct. 8, at West Ottawa.
