Hey WO Tennis Family, Saturday was a big day for our program. Most of the top 10 Division 1 teams in Michigan are in a small pocket of incredibly large and wealthy suburbs around Detroit. Because of this, we have three large events this year where we play against those teams. Here is the current Top 10 along with our results against them BEFORE this event: 1. Northville 2. Utica Eisenhower (Loss 6-3) 3. Novi 4. WEST OTTAWA 5. Ann Arbor Pioneer 6. Bloomfield Hills (Win 6-3) 7. Clarkston 8. Troy (Win 8-1) 9. Rochester Stoney Creek 10. Okemos and Portage Central This Saturday, we got an opportunity to play two more Top-10 teams...Rochester Stoney Creek and Okemos, as well as a second matchup with Hudsonville. Because there are 9 total flights on the team, each school competed in a total of 27 matches. Here's some of the numbers on how we did: - West Ottawa 6, Rochester Stoney Creek 3 - West Ottawa 7, Okemos 2 - West Ottawa 9, Hudsonville 0 - On the day, we won 22 of 27 total matches! - 1 Singles: Evie Price (11) defeated Hudsonville, and lost two hard fought matches to a pair of Division 1 prospects. - 2 Singles: Izzy Gitler (9) medaled at 2nd place. She defeated Stoney Creek and Hudsonville, losing a close battle with senior and division 2 prospect Isabella Hult of Okemos. - 3 Singles: Sydney Shafer (9) medaled at 2nd place. She defeated a tough player from Okemos, then beat Hudsonville before falling 10-8 in a third set superbreaker to Stoney Creek. This is only Sydney's 1st loss of the year!!! - 4 Singles: Maggie Rothstein (12) took first place, defeating all three teams. In fact, she hardly lost a game. Probably her best performance of the year. - 1 Doubles: Kallyn Gaul (12) and Lovelle Kim (12) medaled at 2nd place. They defeated Okemos and Hudsonville in dominant fashion before dropping to a very talented Stoney Creek 1 doubles team. This was Kallyn and Lovelle's best performance of the year easily. Wow was I impressed. - 2 Doubles: Hope Hughes (11) and Haylee Geerlings (10) snagged a 1st place medal today, defeating all three teams. Their ability to pressure opponents has hit an all-time high. - 3 Doubles: Audrey Anderson (10) and Olivia Smith (10) also took 1st place on the day, defeating all three opponents. It was the hardest hitting tennis they've produced all year. - 4 Doubles: Mallory Paff (10) and Hope Sikorski (10) took 1st place on the day, also defeating all three teams. The focus this week has been on pressuring opponents, and they were brilliant at it. -5 Doubles: Paisley Hartman (11) and Eden Slager (9) took 1st place at their flight defeating each team. This was their most consistent performance of the season, maintaining high level of play in every match. Let's update the bingo board and see where we stand against the top ten teams AFTER this weekend's event: 1. Northville 2. Utica Eisenhower (Loss 6-3) 3. Novi 4. WEST OTTAWA 5. Ann Arbor Pioneer 6. Bloomfield Hills (Win 6-3) 7. Clarkston 8. Troy (Win 8-1) 9. Rochester Stoney Creek (Win 6-3) 10. Okemos (Win 7-2) and Portage Central So, what's next? Well, a lot actually. During the week we will conclude OK-Red Conference play with duals against East Kentwood and Grand Haven. Here are the conference standings going into those final matches: Ok-Red Standings 1. West Ottawa 3-0 t2. Hudsonville 2-1 t2. Rockford 2-1 t4. Grandville 1-2 t4. Grand Haven 1-2 6. East Kentwood 0-3 We will also play Forest Hills Northern, currently ranked 2nd in the state in Division 2. When we aren't playing our Conference matches, we always looking to play the top teams in each division to stay sharp. Northern will give us a very strong test. Great job this weekend ladies, I'm so proud of you and thankful that I get to be "Coach Pete". It's a good gig:)
