Freshman star Carston Cole’s 24th place finish led the Panthers and earned him a medal. Cole’s time of 17:18 makes him the 6th fastest freshmen runner in West Ottawa 5k history. His projected “on paper” finish was 41st place, and he just kept passing runners until the end of the race. Joe Elkins joined Cole by finishing just 2 seconds back in 27th place with a 17:20. Elkins also had a “breakout” race and kept passing runners to help him move up from a projected place of 55th. Elkins’ time places him at the number 20 spot of all time for a West Ottawa Sophomore. The top 5 for West Ottawa was rounded out by sophomore Alex Bos (43rd place, 18:00), junior Colin Brown (47th, 18:07) and junior Thomas Dummer (53rd, 18:21). Between the varsity and jv runners for West Ottawa, the young men produced 22 PRs (personal records) and 30 improved times. The Panthers hope to continue the improving times in their next competition on Tuesday, October 2 in the second OK Red Conference “Jamboree” held at Hudsonville’s cc course at Baldwin Middle School at 4:30 pm.
