Hey West Ottawa!

Today the Girls Tennis team edged out Rockford in a field of 11 teams to claim their second straight Regional Title!!! I don’t have the proper words to express what an exciting day it was, but it was incredible.

It was a total team effort. Both Rockford and West Ottawa advanced all eight flights to the semifinals. Rockford sent 5 of their 8 flights into the final, with the West Ottawa girls advancing 7 of 8 flights into the finals. In the finals, Kennedy Dumas (3 singles), Katie Frauenheim (4 singles), and Jolene Soriano and Tyliea Bethke (2 doubles) pushed through to win flight championships. Kennedy and Katie’s wins pulled us to a tie with Rockford, and Jolene and Ty pushed us over the finish line an hour later to take it 26 points to Rockford’s 25. It was a total team effort. It took every single player’s points to get there.

By class, here our your 2019 Regional Champs:

Seniors:
Katie Frauenheim
Chloe Karp
Sutton MacInnes
Jolene Soriano
Kacey Westenbroek

Juniors:
Tyliea Bethke
Ryann Schurman

Sophomores:

Ava Wegmeyer

Freshmen:
Kelly Linart
Maddie Moored
Halle Pratt
Jireh Warren

Special recognition really needs to be given to this incredible senior class. Here are some of their accomplishments by the numbers over the past four years:

Two Regional Titles (2018-2019)
Three OK-Red Titles (2017-2019)
22-2 in OK Red Duels
Four State Finals Appearances (2016-2019)

This is the most accomplished senior class in West Ottawa tennis history, in a sport that has had a lot of success over the years. It’s tough to express how much they have done to elevate the program. And because they have done so much to instill a culture of hard work in the younger girls, there’s no reason the run needs to stop. There will be many girls working hard this offseason who are capable of leading this team into the future.

A special thank you to our whole girls coaching staff. Julia Foster and Laura Curtin for the amazing job they do with our middle schoolers. Jeff Gaul for doing an outstanding job in his first year with the Junior Varsity. And to our varsity assistants, Mike Floch and Brian Metz, who go the extra mile every single day for this program.

In two weeks, the girls will travel to Midland to compete in the State Finals. There are some really good teams over on the east side, but we’re really good too, and we will absolutely be ready to go.

Girls, thanks for a memorable day. I’m grateful that I get to be your coach and for each moment we spend together.

Coach Schwallier
