The 2018 Regional was battle until the very last ball was struck. It was an incredibly close race for 1st and 2nd place. The Panthers played their very best tennis of the year, but ultimately were defeated by both Hudsonville and Rockford to secure 3rd place by the closest of margins. Hudsonville won the Region with 24 points. Rockford took 2nd with 18 points and West Ottawa took 3rd with 17 points.
Although the Panthers took third as a team, there were definitely some individual highlights which include the following:
3 Singles – Dalton Goodwin winning his first round to get his first regional victory as a freshmen. In the semifinal Dalton played against the eventual regional champ from Hudsonville. He played him incredibly tough and took more games off that player than anyone else in the tournament did. Dalton has been working ridiculously hard all year and I’m sure there will be many more regional victories to come in his high school tennis career.
1 Doubles – Tyler Zoerhoff and Derek Maas came into the regional as the 3rd seed after loosing to Hudsonville at the conference tournament in the semifinals on Monday. We knew we were on a crash course with Hudsonville again at the regional and anticipated seeing them in the semifinal again. This time, we were ready. Tyler & Derek played very smart, high percentage doubles and beat Hudsonville to make the regional final. In the final, we fell to a fantastic Rockford team in straight sets, but making the final was a great end to their senior tennis season. Incredibly proud of them.
2 Doubles – Jake Cabana and Luke Linart continued to dominate their flight at the regional this year. Jake and Luke were undefeated in conference dual play, went undefeated at the conference tournament, and went undefeated at the regional to cap off their season. They only dropped a single set to one conference or regional opponent the entire year! Incredibly Impressive. The sky is the limit for these two and I look forward to being apart of their senior seasons next year.
3 Doubles – Ben Metcalf and Tanner Schopp made the jump from 2 doubles on the Junior Varsity last year to 3 doubles on the varsity this year by working incredibly hard in the off season. Their hard work paid off with not only a conference championship at their flight, but a regional championship at 3 doubles as well! Like 2 doubles, Ben and Tanner only dropped a single set to one conference or regional opponent the entire year. I can’t wait to see what they do next year after another off season of hard work.
4 Doubles – The freshmen/senior duo of Teddy Schurman (freshmen) & Paul Stryker (Senior) have played impressive doubles all season and yesterday was no different. With only a single loss in conference dual play, Paul and Teddy were ready to prove to everyone that they were in fact the best 4th doubles team in the conference and region. They did not disappoint by winning both the conference and region at 4 doubles by beating a very good Hudsonville team both times. Paul’s experience and leadership as a senior only pushed Teddy to continually raise his level of play the entire year. They truly were a scary team to watch and to play against.
Overall, we fell short of our team goal of making the state finals by a single point. While that is a hard pill to swallow, I know we will be making great strides this off-season and will come back ready to take it to everyone else in the OK Red and our Region next year. We won’t let this happen again.
Players, thank you for an unforgettable first year as a varsity coach. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of young men to work with. I feel very fortunate that this was my first team and it will be one that I truly never forget. Thank you
