Game Recap

West Ottawa opened district play with a dominant win over visiting Union.

The Red Hawks played strong in the first half, though. Midway through the half, Panther keeper Sam Beetham prevented a likely goal when he ranged well outside of his area to clear a ball off the foot of an attacker.

Soon after, Ray Mackey drew a foul inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick that Omar Mireles finished just past the keeper’s outstretched right hand. Mireles scored again moments later when a ball skipped past a Union defender, giving Mireles an open path to goal. Mireles beat the keeper with a left-footed strike.

In the second half, Capi Urbina scored on one of the prettiest goals of the year. From approximately 25 yards, Urbina drilled a shot that froze the goalie then slid in just under the crossbar. Ray Mackey followed with an equally pretty goal from about the same distance.

The scoring closed when Lennie Lopez disrupted Union from clearing a ball off their goal line and Jorge Campos used his left foot to clean up the loose ball.

The Panthers will be looking for a big crowd when they host second-round play on Thursday at 6:45 against Grand Haven.

Meet Recap

Aaron Weimer (4th 17:16) and Logan Reimink (5th 17:20) managed to earn medals in an elite race on a muddy wet course with one very wrong turn by the leaders that added at least 300 meters to their distance on Saturday, October 14 in the Kent/Ottawa County Invitational. Despite the pouring rain and complete miscalculations by the top 40 runners in the race, the Panthers managed a 5th place finish. Sophomore Thomas Dummer (36th place in 18:37), freshman Alex Bos (37th place 18:38) and sophomore Colin Brown, (38th place, 18:39) rounded out the top 5 for the Panthers. The next competition for West Ottawa Cross-country is the CONFERENCE FINALS at Riverside Park in Grand Rapids on Thursday, October 19 at 4:30 pm.
