Game Recap

The Panthers ended their season with an outstanding soccer game between two very good teams. The difference was a late first-half goal generated from a free kick near midfield along with a goal at the end of the game as the Panthers were aggressively pushed forward.

West Ottawa earned many scoring chances throughout the contest, controlling play for long stretches. In the first half, a rebound shot glanced just over the crossbar. In the second, a header slid just outside the post. And with only minutes to go, the ball got loose in the box resulting in a wild scramble that the Buccaneer keeper corralled in front of two West Ottawa strikers.

The Panthers finished with a 8-7-7 record while playing one of the most challenging schedules in the state. Based on Mlive’s postseason rankings, the Panthers twice played the 6th (East Kentwood) and 7th (Caledonia) ranked teams in Division 1. Three times, they played the 14th (Grand Haven) ranked team. From Division 2, they played the 4th (GR Christian), 8th (Holland), and 19th (Holland Christian) ranked teams, and from Division 3 they played the 1st (Unity Christian) and 12th (Covenant Christian) ranked teams. More than half of the Panthers games were against state-ranked opponents.

The West Ottawa community appreciates the contributions of seniors Sam Beetham, Rene Garcia, Estevon Rosas, Peter Lehman, Danny deForest, Justin Sosa, and Drew Pedersen. These young men led a resurgent program to an outstanding season.

Meet Recap

Aaron Weimer (8th with a 16:29) and Logan Reimink (15th with a 16:44) led the Panthers in the tough OK Red Conference Finals and earned “All-Conference” and “All-Conference Honoroable Mention” respectively. Finishing in the top 15 in this conference is very difficult due to the elite level of competition and both Weimer and Reimink lived up to the challenge. Freshman Alex Bos (42nd in 18:09), senior Otto Dryfhout (45th with an 18:17) and sophomore Thomas Dummer (46th in 18:28) rounded out the scoring for West Ottawa. The Panthers’ next competition will be on October 28 in the State Regional meet in Portage.
