Volleyball:

4. Class C top-ranked Bronson is plenty familiar with tonight’s Quarterfinal opponent, No. 2 Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central – Sturgis Journal

5. Class B No. 4 Niles is hoping to add to its first District and Regional titles with a first Quarterfinal win, over No. 3 Lake Odessa Lakewood – Niles Daily Star

6. Class A No. 3 Grand Rapids Christian downed top-ranked Rockford in the Regional, a big step as the Eagles pursue their first MHSAA championship in the sport with No. 4 DeWitt up next – FOX17

Girls Golf:

Traverse City West’s Anika Dy was named Miss Golf for the second time by the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association – Traverse City Record-Eagle

 

Cross Country:

Coldwater’s Shuaib Aljabaly and Lansing Catholic’s Olivia Theis were named Mr. Cross Country and Miss Cross County, respectively, by the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association – Coldwater Daily Reporter

 

Hockey:

1. The first games of the season can be played today, and Petoskey is among teams anticipating a return to the ice – Petoskey News-Review

2. As part of its hockey preview, the Livingston Daily Press & Argus highlighted Mr. Hockey candidates Josh Albring of Hartland and Adam Conquest of Brighton – Livingston Daily Press & Argus

Girls Swimming & Diving:

1. Honorable mention Spring Lake will send 10 athletes to the Lower Peninsula Division 3 Finals, including three divers – Grand Haven Tribune

2. Hamilton standout Paige Kuhn is banking on a strong finish in the final meet of her high school career – Holland Sentinel

3. Gaylord sophomore Grace Wambier is a school record holder and hopes to add to her accomplishments at the Division 3 Finals – Gaylord Herald Times

4. No. 7 Brighton is aiming to claim the Division 1 team championship with arguably its strongest assemblage of experienced contenders under coach Jason Black – Livingston Daily Press & Argus

 

Boys Soccer:

Meet Recap

The WO Girls CC team finished another season of growth by competing at the MHSAA State finals on Saturday afternoon. The girls finished 16th overall, a five place improvement from 2016, and the best State Meet performance the program has had in the past decade. West Ottawa finished as the third team from the West Michigan area behind Rockford and East Grand Rapids, finishing ahead of OK Red teams of Caledonia, Hudsonville, and Grand Haven.

Leading the way was Abby Olson, who capped off a stellar sophomore season with a 40th place finish. Next was Taylor Schott (JR), Iris Swarthout (JR), Emily Laird (FR), and Katie Frauenheim (JR) who all finished under 20:00 minutes and placed competitively within the field. Senior Emma DeNave and Sophomore Andrea Kennedy finished as 6th and 7th runners for the team, both competing well throughout the race.

Meet Recap

Aaron Weimer and Logan Reimink represented West Ottawa Men’s Cross-country program well through a series of weather delays and over a very muddy state finals course. Aaron finished in 124th place with a 16:46.1 and Logan finished in 126th place with a 16:46.7. Both men are in line for possible All State Academic honors.

Game Recap

The panthers lost in the district semi finals to Hudsonville in 4 sets 17-25, 19-25, 28-26, 12-25. Leading the panthers was Natalie Dunn with 14 kills followed by Julia Miller with 13. Abby Sprick had 37 assists and Abby Panse led in digs with 18. Macy Kuyers and Krista Carter added 5 blocks each.

Meet Recap

The girls cross country team had a competitive performance at the MHSAA regional at Portage this morning despite cold, rainy conditions. Because of their finish, they will advance to the MHSAA State Finals next week in Brooklyn, MI. This is the second year in a row the team has advanced.The girls were only 5 points behind the winner, Caledonia, and placed ahead of Hudsonville who finished 3rd.

Leading the way was sophomore Abby Olson who ran an outstanding race finishing third overall and earning All-Region honors. Also earning All-Region honors was Taylor Schott who finished 9th. Freshman Emily Laird narrowly missed out on these honors, finishing 17th in the field, running one of her best races of the season. Katie Frauenheim had an excellent finish and placed 24th. Rounding out the scoring was Emma DeNave in 38th place. Iris Swarthout and Andrea Kennedy finished in 44th and 76th respectively.

Meet Recap

Aaron Weimer (11th in 16:37) and Logan Reimink (14th in 16:44) were All-Region medalists and state qualifiers on Saturday, October 28 in a cold and tough race in the state regional at Portage. The top 5 for West Ottawa was rounded out by Isaac Sierra (72nd place in 18:08), Alex Bos (77th place in 18:16) and Otto Dryfhout (82nd place in 18:22). Both Weimer and Reimink will now have the opportunity to compete in the MHSAA CROSS_COUNTRY STATE FINALS held at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday, November 4.
