West Ottawa Girls Varsity Lacrosse earned their 2nd win of the season against Jenison, 14-8. Coming off of a big win against Mona Shores last Wednesday, the Panthers came out ready to win right off the draw. The draw control was dominated by Ella Spooner (Jr.), Claire Vellinga (Jr.), and Faith Jongekryg (So.) as a new addition to the midfield. Faith Jongekryg was crucial in gaining draw control and was a natural fit into the midfield lineup. The first half went back and forth between Jenison and WO gaining the lead. Jenison held the upper hand going into the half leading WO 8-7.
At the start of the second half, the Panthers did not hold back and scored multiple goals within the first 5 minutes to regain the lead. The offense was led by team captains Claire Vellinga (Jr.) who had 2 goals and 6 assists and Ella Spooner (Jr.) with 10 goals. Other key contributors such as Mariah Stewart (So.) earned her first goal of the season and Callie Brondyke (Jr.) also chipped in with a goal and earned 3 ground balls.
The Panthers defense shut down Jenison and did not allow a single goal in the second half. Timberlyn Mazeikis (Sr.) was in net making save after save and was a force to be reckoned with. The Panthers defense was also led by Chiara Magrini (So.), Hailey Robarge (Sr.), Ella Bentley (So.), and Fiona Mazeikis (Fr.). The defensive unit held strong and played aggressively to ensure the win over Jenison.
Overall, it was a whole team effort that allowed the Panthers to earn their second win of the season.
