The Varsity Girls Soccer team earned their first win of the season with a hard-fought, 2-1 victory, against Zeeland West.
The Panthers opened the game strong with high-energy play but were unable to produce any goals. After controlling much of the early play, West caught WO on a counter-attack and took a 1-0 into halftime.
The second half featured high-paced, open play which saw both teams create chances. The Panthers tied the game off a deep throw-in when Brenna Rohloff hit Grace Gerrits on a cutting run to the face of goal. Gerrits beat a defender and slotted the ball into the net. WO struck again when Casiana Gibson found Alyssa Karner at the top of the box where Karner perfectly placed her shot to the lower-left corner of the goal for the game-winner. West had a few opportunities late in the game, including a penalty kick with one minute to play, but Panther keeper Grace Pedersen came up with big saves to preserve the win. Pedersen had six saves on the night.
West Ottawa plays again this Tuesday when they host East Kentwood.
