The WO Girls Cross Country team finished 11th in the state on Saturday, their best state meet performance in 22 years. The only other time WO placed higher was in 1996, when the team finished 10th.
Junior Abby Olson led the way for the panthers with her 42nd place finish. Seniors Mady VanWieren and Katie Frauenheim finished next for the team in 73rd and 120th place. Rounding out the team scoring were freshman Kaia Denhof finishing in 126th and senior Iris Swarthout finishing in 147th. Senior Taylor Schott finished closely behind in 148th, and sophomore Emily Laird finished in 189th.
Saturday marked the team’s third straight MHSAA State Meet appearance, and their improvement at each state meet is notable. In 2016, the team finished 21st, in 2017 they finished 16th, and this year was a five place improvement to 11th. The meet caps off an incredible season by the team where they were a very close runner-up at both the conference and the regional meet.
