Panthers News · Panther Girls Lax receives grant from USA Lacrosse.

Recently West Ottawa Girls Lacrosse Head Coach Aaron Skomial was informed that his program was chosen to receive a grant through USA Lacrosse. Coach Skomial had the following reaction.

This gift of this equipment will allow our women athletes at WO the opportunity to play lacrosse without having to purchase the equipment.  We’ll provide the equipment and the opportunity to play the best sport in the world.

Lacrosse has been the fastest growing sport in the country for about 5 years now, and with that growth there are scholarship opportunities at the collegiate level.  Scholarship funding for female lacrosse players is roughly 20%.  That means that 20% of all high school girls who play lacrosse have the potential to play at the collegiate level and earn scholarship money.  This is an amazing opportunity because the scholarship percentage for soccer or basketball is typically under 3%.  Lacrosse brings opportunity for our female athletes to not only have a rewarding experience in our program, but more than likely beyond high school.  We had two players last year that earned scholarships to Lewis University in Illinois.

This equipment will not only provide opportunity for high school athletes, but the equipment will be used for our summer clinic programs as well.  The equipment will be put to good use and hopefully it alleviates any concerns about having to buy equipment to see if you like this sport.  We have kids from all walks of athleticism playing lacrosse.  We have girls that play basketball, hockey, one time soccer players, gymnasts, and cheerleaders. Once girls try lacrosse, they usually fall in love with it.  It’s fast paced, high scoring, and we have a great group of young women that work hard and like to have fun.

We’re excited about the opportunity that the equipment will bring to our future and younger players.  It will allow us to grow the program and bring the sport of lacrosse to other families.  As the father of female collegiate lacrosse player, the sport of lacrosse has been very rewarding for us as a family.  We’d like to be able to give that opportunity to other families and this equipment grant may provide that for some in the future.

Through this award, West Ottawa High School can expect to receive girls’ high school team grant, which includes the following:
