Game Recap

Rockford sent their opening kick directly out of bounds. For the next five minutes, though, they seemed to connect on every pass, dominating play in their offensive end. That changed at about the 5-minute mark, when Capi Urbina gathered possession at the top of the defensive box and sent a long ball over the heads of the aggressive Rockford defense. Omar Mireles outraced the defense to the ball then beat the goalie, who had ranged far off his line to try to play the ball. The two teams split possession and scoring opportunities for the remainder of the half, but the score remained 1-0.

Early in the second half, Rockford was awarded a free kick about 40 yards out, resulting in an arching ball that got loose in front of the West Ottawa goal, ultimately knocked into the back of the net.

These evenly-matched teams battled hard with no additional goals until the 71:30 mark when Urbina carried the ball up the right side, beating the Rockford defense. He placed a perfect cross to the far post where Raekwon Cunningham struck a shot on goal. Omar Mireles finished the play for a 2-1 West Ottawa lead.

Keeper Sam Beetham made a difficult save on a dangerous header soon after, and the Panthers kept the Rams in check for the remainder.

The game began with a rainbow developing to the southeast and ended with a full moon peaking over the tree line. It also ended with a Panther victory, bringing their OK Red record to 1-0-1.
