Meet Recap

On Thursday evening, West Ottawa won the Division 1 Regional tennis tournament. Regionals is the first round of the State Tournament. Our region included 10 teams; all seven teams in the OK-Red plus three other schools. West Ottawa was a slight underdog, having just finished 3rd place overall in the OK-Red last Saturday behind Rockford and Hudsonville, and just ahead of Grandville and Grand Haven, who are also very strong. Playing their best tennis of the year under pressure, the boys finished one point ahead of Rockford for the title after 11 hours of competition.

The following are the final team standings from the event:

1. West Ottawa 21 points
2. Rockford 20 points
3t. Hudsonville 15 points
3t. Grand Haven 15 points
5. Grandville 13 points
6. Caledonia 9 points
7. Holland 5 points
8. East Kentwood 2 points
9. Kalamazoo Central 1 point
10. Union 0 points

The purpose of regionals is to select the teams that will compete in the state finals. There are 8 division 1 regionals. Each regional sends their top two teams to compete at the State Finals. So, West Ottawa and Rockford are the two schools which will head to Midland next weekend to represent the West side of the state in at the State Finals.

Individual Results:
– High school tennis is comprised of 8 flights; four singles and four doubles.
– All eight of our flights won at least one match yesterday. We were one of only two schools to do that. Had any of our flights had failed to do so, we’d have either shared the title with Rockford or taken second to them. Every person was critical. Here are a few of the highlights from the day:

Flight Champions:
2 Singles – Junior Sam Duckworth
2 Doubles – Sophomores Drew Dykens and Michael Hoffman

Flight Finalists:
4 Singles – Sophomore Derek Maas
3 Doubles – Senior Reagan McCaw and Junior Sam Gruenler

Other Important wins:
1 Singles – Junior Travis Bethke defeated East Kentwood to advance to the Semifinals
3 Singles – Senior Justin Anair defeated Caledonia to advance to the Quarterfinals
1 Doubles – Juniors Dominic Aquino and Adam Dykens defeated Holland to advance to the Quarterfinals
4 Doubles – Junior Danny Mauger and Sophomore Tyler Zoerhof defeated Caledonia to advance to the Semifinals

Congratulations boys.
