Friday night the West Ottawa varsity football team travelled to East Kentwood to square off against another OK-Red foe. This was the coldest game of the year. Despite this, West Ottawa’s defense stepped up to the plate throughout the course of the game.
The Panthers held East Kentwood to -7 yards rushing and just over 100 yards of total offense- almost all of that came on a 78-yard touchdown pass from Jason Dickey to star Wide Receiver Brayden Miller. This was the only explosive play that East Kentwood had throughout the course of the game. West Ottawa trailed 7-0 when Ryan Verhelst returned a punt 41 yards to the two yard line. Brandon Allen ran the ball in from the two yard line. Without kicker Bryan Holmes– due to an ACL injury- the Panthers were unable to make the extra-point.
West Ottawa scored on a 6 yard run by Brandon Allen with just over 9 minutes remaining.
With East Kentwood marching down the field thanks to a West Ottawa fumble, the Panthers defense buckled down. On the last play of the game, East Kentwood quarterback Jason Dickey was picked off deep in Panther territory by Ryan Verhelst.
Brandon Allen finished the game with 129 yards rushing on 26 carries.
West Ottawa dominated the line of scrimmage throughout the game and was only held back by turnovers. West Ottawa will now qualify for the State Playoffs which start in 2 weeks. Next week for the final regular season of the game, the Panthers will travel to play one of the best in the OK-Red, Grand Haven.
