Wednesday night at the West Ottawa Soccer Complex was a special night for the West Ottawa seniors. This was their final home game and to them it meant a lot. Hard work in practice helped seniors, Connor Bade and Joshi Covarrubias, achieve their first starts of the season as the Panthers prepared to take on the Grandville Bulldogs.
The game started with a few back-and-forth exchanges between the two teams until the tenth minute, when Grandville punched one in to take a 1-0 lead. The Panthers quickly rebounded six minutes later with a cross from Joshi Covarrubias and a powerful, right-footed finish from Spence Buys. With the score tied at 1-1 the two teams once again continued to trade blows but with no results. The second half was controlled by West Ottawa but just like in their previous game against Hudsonville, they couldn’t find the back of the net and found themselves in their second straight overtime appearance. The overtime period was uneventful, but with just over six minutes to play, off a Juan Torres assist, Dylan Wyckoff finessed a shot passed the Bulldog keeper to give an elated Panthers squad the go-ahead goal, and that’s how it would finish; a 2-1 overtime victory for West Ottawa. The Panthers start the state playoffs on Monday, October 17th against Jenison at the Grand Haven Soccer Complex.
